Carnival of the Tarot – Halloween Edition

  • October 28, 2007 5:19 pm

witch-cat-moonHalloween falls on Wednesday this year, for those of us who enjoy it as a tradition. It is also observed as Samhain, the word for November in Gaelic languages, and is regarded as the Celtic New Year. It is also knows as All Souls Day in Catholic traditions.

This is a quick carnival. It’s a busy time of year for many of us, and it is reflected in a small number of participants this week.

First, Gypcy Woman presents Tarot Reading for Writer posted at Virtual Worlds.

Then Kapherus from The Art of Cartomancy has an interesting post on the relation between a pack of playing cards and the Tarot in The Ace of Diamonds and the Magician.

The next edition will again be hosted here on next week at the same time.

Help take the Carnival of the Tarot ‘on the road’. If you are interested in hosting a future Carnival on your own blog, let me know what Sunday you would like to do so. If you have any questions about hosting the Carnival yourself, please ask. It is a good way to drive traffic to your site, and to share your work with other people.

Which Victorian Romantic Card Am I?

  • October 26, 2007 8:21 pm

I love Baba Prague decks. I have two of them, but I don’t have this one. So I thought I’d try this quiz for fun and to see what deck I might be.

According to the quiz, I am The World

Reaching a state of complete happiness – Rapturous joy – Sheer happiness, dancing through life – Ultimate fulfillment, reaching your life’s goal.

I certainly don’t feel like that. In fact I feel more like the Hanged Man every day. Spinning my wheels and going nowhere fast. This image strikes me as a bit odd. It seems to be a part of a bigger picture, and I wonder why they selected this particular bit to be the World. It looks as though the lady holding the basket of flowers is about to fall over onto her back. While this reflects my natural clumsiness, and tendency to fall down on occasion, I don’t see how it reflects the archetype of the World. It minds me a bit of a drunken revelry, in which this lady has lost her top and is about to fall on her backside. Some party, eh?

At any rate, neither the image nor description (which doesn’t in my opinion reflect the image) relate to me in any way right now. It just goes to show you how useless these online quizzes can be. But they are fun to play with. And sometimes the results, however far off they may be, can bring you to reflect on things. In this case, my general malaise and lack of enthusiasm for just about anything right now. I hadn’t realized I’ve been feeling that way until I took this quiz, and got this card as an answer. Even in a silly online quiz, the Tarot speaks.

Simple Fortunetelling With Tarot Cards – Contest

  • October 22, 2007 6:13 pm

simpleI have a brand new copy of Corrine Kenner’s book Simple Fortunetelling with Tarot Cards.

I would like to give it away to one of my readers. So I’m having a contest here on Willow Tree.

In keeping with the idea of ‘simplicity’, I’m going to keep this very simple. There are seventy-eight cards in a standard Tarot deck. On the morning of the 31st of October, I will shuffle, cut and draw one card from my Halloween Tarot deck. Between now and then you simply need to leave a comment on this post with your choice of one of the seventy-eight cards from a standard Tarot deck. This way you can check through the comments to see what cards are already taken.

If I receive less than 78 entries, I will keep drawing till I pull a card that has been chosen. In the event that I have more than 78 people enter (which I doubt, but you never know), I will add a second deck so duplicate cards may be chosen.

Only one card per person, please. Just leave a comment below this post with your choice of Tarot card. If your comment does not appear right away, don’t worry. It may be caught in my spam filter, which I check a few times each day. There is no need to leave a duplicate comment. If you don’t see your comment appear, you can always email me at willow@willowtreetarot.com with your card choice and, if necessary, I will add it to the comment section myself.

I will announce the winner on Halloween. Good luck!

Update:
The winner has been announced. Thanks to everyone for playing!

Carnival of the Tarot – Eleventh Edition

  • October 21, 2007 6:01 pm

Welcome to the Eleventh Edition of the Carnival of the Tarot.

Halloween is nearly here. Our weather this week has been a bit too warm and humid for me to really get into the Halloween mood. But I have still put out my black cats, jack-o-lanterns, witches and candles. I have been watching the leaves change into fiery colors as they slowly begin carpeting the ground. I remain hopeful that by month’s end, autumn weather will reclaim New England.

This week we have a beginning and continuation of two educational series, and welcome a new contributor to the Carnival of the Tarot.

The Rainring Deck is a series of 81 cards. The system for reading them can be a bit complex. 94Stranger has begun a series of online classes to offer “guidance on how to navigate the unfamiliar world of Rainring”. The first link is the Intro to the lessons, followed by the Lesson One in the series.

From the Art of Cartomancy, Kapherus offers Basic Cartomancy Part II – Number Meanings

In her first entry, the Tarot Dame gives a great example of how the Tarot can talk to us, even about the ‘little’ things in life in My King of Wands Phenomenon.

I do not have a post to enter this week, but would like to announce a contest. This week I will be giving away a brand-new copy of Corrine Kenner’s Simple Fortunetelling with Tarot Cards. I’ll be announcing the details of the contest tomorrow, so please return then to find out how you can win.

Bittersweet Baby

Don’t worry, they’re silk flowers.

I was putting out my fall decorations, and gave her this as a peace offering so she’d leave the rest of them alone. So far, it’s worked.

Please visit Friday Ark.

And please help pay the medical bill for this poor kitty, if you can. She is on the road to recovery thanks to a kind-hearted vet.

Carnival of the Tarot – Tenth Edition

  • October 14, 2007 6:00 pm

Ten of CupsWelcome to the Tenth Edition of the Carnival of the Tarot.

When I started this project, I really didn’t know what sort of reaction to expect. The Cartomancy community is a vibrant and creative group of folks, as as a result can be quite unpredictable. But it has been lovely to see such a fine response in contributions and readership. Let’s hope that over the next ten weeks, our little Carnival will continue to grow and thrive.

All are welcome! If you have something to say about Cartomancy, and you have written it in your blog, please join us. There is room for so many more in our Cartomancy Carnival.

Fall weather is here, and many of us in the northern hemisphere have Halloween on our minds. It is definitely a favorite holiday of mine. In the Halloween spirit, Archertarot’s Weblog has a really cool urban-legend inspired spread to share called The Killer in the Backseat.

To help us understand the use of playing cards for divination, we have Playing Card Suit Interactions from The Art of Cartomancy.

Demonstrating the use of the fascinating and thorough Rainring Deck, Peter at Rainring Blog shares the completed version of Rainring Analyzes Tarot.

Here at Willow Tree you can read about the Fantod Pack, an Oracle deck using the artwork of Edward Gorey.

And here ends the Tenth Edition of the Carnival of the Tarot.

The Fantod Pack

  • October 14, 2007 11:36 am

fantodI mentioned elsewhere that I would love to see an Edward Gorey Tarot. While not a Tarot deck, there is something called the Fantod Pack that uses Gorey’s artwork to create a deck for Cartomancy.

From the Gorey House website:

Each of the 20 cards forecasts a list of outcomes for the user ranging from the merely unpleasant (loss of hair, breakage, thwarted ambitions) to the downright horrible (catarrh, spasms, shriveling). The 32-page booklet provides interpretation of the cards courtesy of one Madame Groeda Weyrd

This deck is a re-print of the original, and reportedly of much higher quality. Described on the site as “a kaleidoscope of catastrophe”. According to the Free Dictionary, the definition of the word fantod is, 1. a. A state of nervous irritability. b. Nervous movements caused by tension. 2. An outburst of emotion; a fit. Certainly understandable if you are caught in a kaleidoscope of catastrophe.

Now that the Halloween season is approaching, this deck has created quite a stir on one of the Tarot forums I read.

Here is where you can get a reading from the Fantod, or view the entire deck.

The Ninth Carnival of the Tarot

  • October 7, 2007 9:17 am

The Ninth Carnival of the Tarot is now up for review at Archertarot’s Weblog. Stop in at her place to visit the Carnival and enjoy the posts this week.

Many thanks to Lynda for doing such a wonderful job hosting the Carnival.

Next week, the Carnival returns here.
